An Homage to Dunedin — More Than Just a University City

There are places we visit as tourists. And then there are places we truly feel.
I have just returned from a wonderful weekend in Dunedin, where our eldest son graduated from University of Otago — and I feel compelled to share the experience.
To be honest, I did not quite know what to expect.
As a German who attended university in Hannover — a city where university life blends quietly into everyday urban life — I found Dunedin’s deep academic traditions and strong student culture both fascinating and moving.
Over the past 14 years living in Auckland and raising three boys, I had heard countless stories about Dunedin’s student culture. Not all of them painted the city in the best light.
But what I discovered this weekend was something far richer, deeper, and far more meaningful.
Of course, I already knew Dunedin’s spectacular wildlife and natural beauty — the penguins, seals, dramatic coastlines, and windswept beaches are reason enough to visit. And somehow, all three of our boys independently decided to attend Otago University. I suspect the main motivation may simply have been to be as far away from their parents as possible.
Yet this weekend revealed another side of Dunedin entirely.
The graduation ceremony was one of the most heartfelt and authentic celebrations of education and community I have ever experienced.
The entire city seemed to come alive in honour of its graduates. Streets were lined with applauding locals as students made their way proudly through town towards the historic Town Hall, led by bagpipes, university dignitaries, professors, and mentors in full academic regalia.
It was not simply a ceremony. It was a city embracing its young people.
You could feel the history, tradition, and pride woven into every moment.
And behind every graduate stood years of growth and resilience.
These young people did not simply earn degrees. They grew up here.
Many lived far away from home for the first time, often in less-than-perfect student accommodation, navigating the famous Dunedin cold that seems to creep into your bones not only during winter, but often year-round. They learned independence, perseverance, friendship, and resilience.
Perhaps that is part of what makes Otago graduates so special.
Dunedin shapes people.
As both a parent and someone working in tourism, I was deeply moved by the sense of community, tradition, and belonging that this city still manages to preserve in an increasingly fast-moving world.
In tourism, we often speak about “authentic experiences.”This was one.
Not manufactured. Not polished for visitors.Simply real.
So here is my heartfelt homage to Dunedin — a city of wild beauty, deep tradition, youthful energy, and remarkable heart.
And to University of Otago: chapeau.
Thank you for not only educating young people, but helping shape resilient, grounded, capable human beings.
