More Than Five Stars – The Stories Behind the Reviews

When I started Beautiful Nature Tours Auckland, I never set out to collect five-star reviews. I simply wanted to share the New Zealand that made me fall in love with this country nearly three decades ago.

The hidden waterfalls. The wild black sand beaches. The dawn chorus of native birds. The conversations over great coffee or a glass of local wine. The moments when people stop, take a deep breath and simply say, “Wow.”

Those are the moments that matter.

At the end of each tour, I never expect a review. After all, my guests are on holiday. Their time is precious. So when someone takes a few minutes to write about their experience, I feel genuinely humbled. It means they believed their day was worth sharing with others.

In a world where AI can write almost anything and marketing can make everything look perfect, authentic reviews have never been more important. They are written by real travellers who have trusted me with a day—or sometimes several days—of their once-in-a-lifetime journey through New Zealand. Their words aren’t polished by a marketing team. They reflect genuine experiences, unexpected moments and honest emotions.

What touches me most is that many reviews don’t focus on the itinerary. Instead, they talk about feeling welcomed, never feeling rushed, discovering places they would never have found on their own, or how the day felt more like exploring with a local friend than joining a tour.

That is exactly what I hope to create.

No two tours are ever the same because no two travellers are the same. Some guests want challenging coastal hikes. Others dream of sitting at a vineyard overlooking the ocean. Some are passionate photographers, wildlife lovers or food enthusiasts. My favourite part of guiding is listening, adapting and creating a day that feels personal rather than following a script.

I often say that luxury isn’t always about five-star hotels or expensive restaurants. Sometimes luxury is having the time to listen to the waves, watching a kererū glide through the forest, hearing the stories behind a place, or enjoying a picnic on a beach with no one else around.

That’s the New Zealand I love sharing.

Every review represents more than a rating. It reminds me of the people behind the words—the honeymoon couple seeing glowworms for the first time, the family celebrating a milestone, the adventurous hikers who embraced muddy boots with a smile, or the solo traveller who arrived as a guest and left as a friend.

To everyone who has travelled with me and taken the time to leave a review, thank you. Your kindness supports a small local business far more than you probably realise. More importantly, your honest words help future travellers choose experiences that are genuine, personal and meaningful.

If you’re planning a journey anywhere in the world, I encourage you to look beyond the stars. Read the stories. Look for reviews that speak about connection, flexibility, authenticity and those little moments that couldn’t have been planned.

Because, in the end, those are often the memories that stay with us the longest.
