Auckland on Two Wheels – How a Little Nudge Became a New E-Bike Adventure

Sometimes the best ideas just need someone to give them a push!

I’ve always loved exploring Auckland, whether on foot, behind the wheel of my tour vehicle or on my mountain bike. For ages, I’d been toying with the idea of adding a guided cycling tour to Beautiful Nature Tours Auckland. Somehow, though, it kept slipping down my rather long to-do list.

Then an email arrived from four lovely travellers from Germany, asking about a private bicycle tour through Auckland’s neighbourhoods and along its beautiful coastline.

My first thought? What a great idea! My second? Why haven’t I done this sooner?

From an Idea to a Few Sore Legs

First came the practicalities: finding a reliable bike rental partner, comparing bicycles and sorting out the logistics. An adventure in itself, as some suppliers seemed rather more enthusiastic about fixing bikes than answering emails!

Then came the fun part.

One morning, I jumped on my mountain bike to test the route I’d been putting together. I wanted something beyond the usual sightseeing circuit – a ride combining coastal scenery, leafy neighbourhoods, peaceful green spaces and some of my favourite local spots.

About 30–40 kilometres later, with a big smile on my face and a few hills in my legs, I knew this could work beautifully.

I also knew exactly why E-bikes were the way to go!

Hills, Harbours and a Well-Earned Flat White

Auckland isn’t exactly flat. Our city sits on a volcanic field with around 53 volcanic centres, so hills are very much part of the landscape. The upside? Some fabulous views. The downside? Well, your legs might have an opinion!

That’s where E-bikes come in. A little electric assistance makes those climbs much more enjoyable, leaving plenty of energy to appreciate the scenery.

The route winds through Auckland’s eastern suburbs, along coastal stretches overlooking the Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto Island, through green corridors and past places that many visitors would otherwise miss.

And because this is my kind of tour, there will be time for stories, photos and, naturally, a coffee stop with a view.

New Zealand may be famous for its wine, but we take our coffee just as seriously. A good flat white overlooking the water? Practically compulsory!

Your Ride, Your Pace

One thing I particularly wanted was flexibility. After all, this is a private tour, not a cycling competition!

The route can be shortened or extended depending on fitness levels, interests and how adventurous everyone feels on the day. Some guests might prefer a gentler ride with more time for photos and coffee, while others may fancy a few extra kilometres and another viewpoint or two.

There’s also a choice of bikes: comfortable E-cruisers with a relaxed, upright riding position or E-mountain bikes for those who prefer something sportier. Experienced cyclists can even opt for traditional bikes if they fancy tackling Auckland’s hills under their own steam.

We’ll generally spend around four hours exploring, with a little extra time allowed for transfers and unplanned stops. Because sometimes the best moments happen when you aren’t watching the clock.

A Big Thank You to My First Cycling Guests!

One of the things I love about being a private guide is how often my guests inspire new ideas.

This time, four travellers from Germany gave me the nudge I needed to turn a long-standing idea into something real. So a big thank you to them for getting the wheels turning – quite literally!

What began as a special request has now become the City of Sails E-Bike Adventure, a new addition to Beautiful Nature Tours Auckland.

It’s a chance to discover the city at a different pace, enjoy the outdoors, explore places beyond the usual tourist trail and perhaps find a few unexpected favourites along the way.

And having tested the route myself, I can’t wait to share it.

Sometimes all it takes is one little question: “Could we do something a bit different?”

As it turns out, absolutely!
