Fascinating Wild West Coast and Gannet Colony

Writer's picture: gesa815gesa815

A windswept rugged coastline stretching 60km north showcases Muriwai's spectacular black sand surf beaches. At its southern end, Otakamiro Point is the site of one of our few mainland gannet (takapu) breeding colonies (October-April).

8.00 - 8.30 am Pick up from CBD Hotel (or Ferry Wharf)

Leaving the City of Sails we travel through Kumeu Wine Country on our way to Muriwai (ca.45 Min), you will walk in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary’s (Hillary Trail) on an energizing walk with fantastic views.

After a short picnic, you head off from Maukatia Bay along the Otakamiro Trail to the Gannet Colony (August - March) and soak in breathtaking views along the wild black Sand Coast. You might spot some Maui Dolphins and Fur Seals (Kekeno).

Witness high energy forces at work – sun, wind and waves. Nature dominates here – we won’t and can’t tame it.

A private tour from Auckland

Duration 4 hrs + City Highlights (7hrs).
