Ōmanawanui Track – A True West Coast Gem

If you love breathtaking views and don’t mind a challenge, the Ōmanawanui Track in the Waitākere Ranges might just be one of the best hikes around Auckland. With sweeping views of the Manukau Harbour, Awhitu Peninsula, and Whatipū Beach, this track is a real standout and one of my absolute favourites. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but if you enjoy magnificent views, it will quite literally take your breath away.

From the very first steps, you’re surrounded by native bush, with glimpses of ocean and beach opening up along the way. The trail winds its way up the ridge, and there’s something magical about the rustling leaves, the calls of native birds, and the distant sound of waves rolling in. It’s nature at its very best.

What makes Ōmanawanui so special are the incredible views at almost every turn. Set high on the hillside, the track offers panoramic vistas over the rugged West Coast. On a clear day, you can even spot Mt Taranaki far in the distance. Reaching the summit is always a highlight — standing there, with the coastline stretching endlessly in both directions, really reminds you how special Auckland is.

The return track is about 9.6 km long and includes around 2,420 stairs. Don’t be intimidated — it’s very achievable with a good base level of fitness. And for those who’d prefer to take it a little easier, there’s always the option to walk the track one way. I’ll happily pick you up from the other end, which halves the challenge but still gives you the full reward of this stunning hike.

Ōmanawanui is also a fantastic choice for those who enjoy a bit of adventure. There are some steep and challenging sections that will get the heart racing, but the sense of accomplishment at the end is unbeatable. The track is well-maintained, clearly marked, and offers plenty of spots to pause, catch your breath, and soak in the views.

To top it all off, we rounded out the day with some true Kiwi hospitality at Albert’s Huia Store — a quirky, unique spot that’s the perfect finish to an adventure on the West Coast.

For me, this track is the perfect combination of adventure, nature, and genuine local charm — a true gem of the Waitākere Ranges.
